Heavy-duty receptacle
Repeated plugging and hours of full load are hard on bargain receptacles. We use heavy-duty receptacles rated for the job.
Plugging in a mobile connector? Get a 240-volt outlet on its own circuit, placed where the cord reaches without strain.
A NEMA 14-50 is a four-wire, 50-amp, 240-volt outlet, the same type used for RVs and many electric ranges. Most plug-in Level 2 chargers and mobile connectors are built to use it.
Because an EV pulls a steady load for hours, the outlet, wire and breaker all have to be sized for continuous use. On a 50-amp circuit, that means charging at no more than 40 amps; many mobile connectors draw 32.
We mount the outlet where your cord reaches the charge port without stretching. Most of our Level 2 charger installation jobs start with that one question: where does the car sit?
A NEMA 14-50 outlet makes sense if you use a mobile connector, want to take the charger with you when you move, or already own a plug-in unit.
A hardwired charger makes more sense if you charge daily and never unplug the unit. There's no receptacle to wear out, and some chargers run faster when hardwired. Tesla drivers can compare both on our Tesla charger installation page.

Most outlet failures start as a loose connection that heats up. We torque terminals to spec.
Depending on the code edition your town has adopted, a garage or outdoor 240-volt outlet may need ground-fault protection. We follow the local requirement.
Driveway outlets get an in-use cover so the plug stays protected while connected.
An outlet circuit is priced like any other Level 2 circuit and falls in the same $600 and $2,500 range we quote across Chicago. Short runs near the panel cost less; long runs, outdoor conduit and panel work add to it.
We install 240-volt EV outlets across Chicago and nearby suburbs.

No. Many dryers use a 30-amp outlet with a different plug shape. A 14-50 is rated for 50 amps and is what most EV mobile connectors expect.
A 6-50 is a three-wire, 50-amp outlet without a neutral. Some chargers accept it; we match the outlet to the plug on your equipment.
Up to 40 amps on a 50-amp circuit, depending on the charger. Tesla's Mobile Connector with a 14-50 adapter charges at up to 32 amps.
Yes, with a weatherproof in-use cover and conduit protected along the wall, which matters through a Chicago winter.
Tell us which charger or connector you have and where you park. We'll size the circuit and place the outlet where the cord reaches.
