The short answer

What Level 2 Charger Installs Cost in Chicago

Most home Level 2 installs we plan in Chicago fall between about $600 and $2,500 for the electrical work. The charger itself is a separate purchase.

The low end is a garage next to a panel with open spaces and capacity to spare. The high end is a long run to a detached garage, finished walls and ceilings to work around, or a panel that needs attention first.

Panel and service upgrades are priced separately after a site visit, so they aren't part of the EV charger installation cost above. Once you know the budget, our at-home EV charging page explains how the install itself works.

Cost drivers

The Five Things That Move the Price

✓

Distance from the panel

Every foot of wire and conduit adds material and labor. Detached garages often need buried conduit.

✓

Panel capacity

Open spaces and spare capacity keep cost down. A full panel or small service adds work.

✓

Wall and ceiling finishes

Unfinished basements and garages are simple. Finished spaces take more time to route through cleanly.

✓

Circuit size

A 60-amp circuit needs heavier wire than a 40-amp one. On long runs, that difference adds up.

✓

Indoor or outdoor

Outdoor mounts need weather-rated equipment and protected conduit along the exterior.

Costs Outside the Electric Vehicle Charger Installation Itself

The charger. Level 2 units are bought separately, and prices vary by brand and features. Smart, ENERGY STAR certified models keep the ComEd rebate option open.

Permits. In Chicago and the suburbs we serve, adding a charger circuit needs an electrical permit, and permit fees are part of the job cost.

Panel or service work. If the load check shows the house needs more capacity, see the options on our panel upgrade for EV charger page.

Patching and finishing. Drywall patching and painting after routing through finished space may be quoted separately.

Common questions

Cost Questions

Why do quotes vary so much?

Because distance, panel condition and wall finishes vary so much from one Chicago house to the next. A site visit replaces guesses with a fixed scope.

Is a NEMA 14-50 outlet cheaper than a hardwired charger?

The electrical work is similar. Outlets can save on the charger if you already own a mobile connector, but the circuit costs about the same.

Does a detached garage cost more?

Usually, because the run is longer and often needs buried conduit across the yard.

Will the price change after the visit?

The written scope sets the price for the work described. Changes only come if you change the scope or we find something hidden that has to be fixed, and we'll explain it first.
